Most noobs start off with bag-seed (Photo-period). These seeds are either male or female and their flower period is dictated by the amount of light they receive. In nature (or a outside grow) the plants will start flowering when the daylight hours falls below 12 hours per day. While they receive more than 12 hours they will keep vegging.

The seed that a noob should start of with is a auto-flowering strain. These plants will grow to harvest within a certain time, usually between 10 and 12 weeks. It doesn’t matter how much light it gets or how little, it will automatically go through all the stages, germination, seedling, veg and flower.

Feminized seeds are photo-period seeds that are guaranteed female. This means that you know you can put all your resources into growing the best plant you can without the risk of wasting time on a male. As with bag-seed the plant will only go into flower when the light schedule is changed.
